From the Principal
Waverley Primary School is situated in the eastern suburbs of Launceston. The school is the heart of the community as Waverley is a small, isolated suburb. There are currently 150 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, comprising of 7 classes. Our school prides itself on the motto of being “A Place to Shine” and we aim to continually provide wonderful life and learning opportunities for our children. We are an inclusive school community that focuses on three school values of Respect, Learning and Safety. Our staff and community have high expectations and aspirations for our children and these are realised through the skill and dedication of members of “Team Waverley” and are reflected in the quality relationships and learning outcomes achieved by our students.
The school has a strong commitment to building self and social awareness and focuses on the mental health of the entire community. We offer established programs that develop capacity within the early years of schooling. In 2014 we have been awarded “Playgroup of the Year” (non-affiliated) as recognised by Playgroup Tasmania Inc. which is an award at a state level. Our Early Years programs include Early Connections, Itsy Bitsy Babies, Pregnant and Pampered, Out and About and To Your Door – the programs on offer are not only school based, but are conducted in the community and also in the homes of families. The very full school curriculum provides programs that cater for a wide range of student abilities, from the gifted and talented, to those requiring support and remediation. The performing arts play a very important role in the education of our students with opportunities to participate in Art, Music, choirs, dance, instrumental groups and drama. Sport also plays an important role with students having the opportunity to participate in Launceston School Sport Association rosters and events, as well as the school funded “Waverley Lakers” basketball teams that play on a Friday evening. Waverley is also known for the programs and opportunities it offers which include a 5 day a week Breakfast program, a running club, its’ involvement in academic programmes such as The Tournament of the Minds, Grammar Challenge and Reader’s Cup. We also have our own school bus and this is used to enhance our school based programs such as our Oral Language excursions.
Waverley Primary school is committed to working with its community and supporting teachers working together in designing personalised learning opportunities for all students. We value a high level of support from a very active School Association who work in partnership with staff to provide programs and resources of the highest quality for our students.
On behalf of Team Waverley I welcome you to our school and look forward to developing positive relationships with you and your children over their journey at Waverley Primary School.
