From the Principal

We are thrilled to announce the results of the Year 6 Leadership Board 2024 election. After a careful selection process, our students have elected a group of exceptional people who will be taking on vital leadership roles within our school community.
The elected students recently attended a meeting where they were briefed on the statement of duties and responsibilities associated with their leadership positions. In preparation for addressing the Year 3-6 students, they participated in a speech writing workshop, refining their ability to articulate why they will be outstanding leaders for the upcoming year.
We are especially delighted to share that two students, Charlotte M and Layla have been elected as School Captains for 2024. Their dedication and enthusiasm have not gone unnoticed, and we are confident they will excel in guiding our school towards a successful and harmonious future.
Our Leadership Board Elect:
- Charlotte and Layla - School Captains
- Jessie, Kacie, Kallee, Maetell, Mia and Shaylah.
As we look ahead to next year, the following leadership roles will be selected by the student leadership group early in 2024: Vice Captain, House Captain, Literacy Leader, and Nutrition Leaders.
Congratulations to all the successful candidates! The investiture assembly, where we officially confer roles, is scheduled to take place early in 2024. This marks the beginning of a significant chapter in our academic journey, and we are excited to witness the positive impact they will undoubtedly make.
The School Captains-elect will be leading the Presentation Assembly on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023. This will be their first official duty, and we have full confidence in their ability to inspire and lead our students with grace and integrity.
While we celebrate the achievements of those who have secured leadership positions, we also take a moment to acknowledge the resilience and character of those who were not successful this time. The true test of a leader often comes when faced with disappointment. It is essential to remember that celebrating with empathy and demonstrating humility are integral parts of the leadership responsibilities we expect from all students at Waverley Primary.
We encourage everyone in our school community to support and uplift one another, fostering an environment where each student can thrive, regardless of the role they hold. We believe that every student has the potential for leadership, and this experience is an opportunity for personal growth and development.
Once again, congratulations to our newly elected leaders, and thank you to all students who participated in this process. We look forward to a fantastic year of leadership, growth, and collaboration at Waverley Primary School.
Term 4 is always a busy time as we finish off the 2023 school year but also plan for next year. A significant part of this is staffing. At this point, I am not anticipating very many staff changes which is a good result for our school.
Looking ahead to next year, the 2024 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will occur in Term 1, from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March 2024. You may recall that NAPLAN occurred in Term 1 this year whereas in the past it has been in Term 2.
Every school day matters! Even though we are now in the final few weeks of the school year this does not mean ‘taking the foot off the accelerator’. Normal standards of behaviour still apply, regular attendance at school is critical and continued engagement with learning is required.
Volunteer Morning Tea
On Friday 15th December at 11am we will have a special morning tea to acknowledge and thank the wonderful people who have supported our school. Invitations will be sent out soon. If you know someone who has anonymously supported our school and feel they should be recognised, we would love to hear from you. Please contact the office.
1-2 Meallin Visual Arts
1-2 Meallin Visual Art lessons, we have been focusing on creating texture and collages with mixed media techniques such as paint, water colour, sharpies and using tissue paper and cardboard with paint to add extra tactile appearances.
As spring is here, we have been enjoying looking at the flowers bloom and the contrasting colours around our school, including the Waverley Lake. We have especially loved the cherry blossoms, which have been a great source of our inspiration and designs today.
We first stencilled our designs with grey lead to create the cherry blossom flowers we see around Waverley and Launceston. We added a dark blue sharpie marker to make more contrasting designs. We tried to use a variety of straight lines, thick lines, squiggly lines, flowers, stems and leaves. We also coloured in some of our flowers and left some just outlines.
Using a paintbrush and black paint, we carefully drew cherry tree branches and stems coming out of the top of the vase. We used acrylic paint. To finish, we crinkled up the squares of light and dark pink tissue paper to make them look like small cherry blossoms.
We have closely observed details of flowers, shrubs, and insects in our environment. We have looked at a range of drawing and painting media to represent objects and flowers in the environment in our artworks. We used many techniques that create texture, depth and form.
Book Donation

Last week Dennis and June from the Kings Meadows Lions Club kindly donated two books to our school. We are very grateful for the ongoing support of our school and know that our students will love reading these beautiful books.
Uniform
Hats must be worn by students when outside in term 4. Please check with your child that they have their school hat. Students have already been encouraged to wear their hat outside on days when the UV is high. School hats can be purchased from our uniform shop.
School shorts or trousers are plain black. We have some examples of shorts and track pants in our uniform shop that can be purchased from Kmart. We also have a range of second-hand items to give away or that you can purchase. Our staff in the School Office are very happy to help you and your child(ren) with all uniform needs.
Please note: branded leggings and very short hot pant style shorts are not part of our school uniform.

Ice Cream Sales
A reminder that we have ice cream sales on a Monday at lunch time. All proceeds support our Year 6 celebration activities. You can order your ice cream or icy pole on the Qkr! app or you can bring cash on the day.

2024 Kindergarten Enrolments

Children born in 2019 are required to enrol in Kindergarten for 2024. More inforamtion about Kindergarten in Tasmanian Government Schools can be found by following the link below.
We have a pre-kinder program that takes place every Friday morning the year prior to starting Kinder. We invite families with pre-kinder age children to our Friday program.
Any families that are yet to enrol their child in kindergarten need to do so as soon as possible. If you have family or friends who would like to be considered, please encourage them to contact our school.
Working With Vulnerable People Registration
Parents and carers if you remain with your child in their classroom beyond school drop off, or volunteer for parent help, or would like to attend a school excursion we must see a copy of your registration card. When you sign in at the office please enter your RWVP number.
It is against the law for a person to work or volunteer at any DECYP School without a current working with vulnerable people registration.
If you would like to volunteer at Waverley Primary School we would love to hear from you. To apply for registration please follow the link below:
Attendance
Please contact school when your child is absent. We have many students missing days ‘here and there’ and this is having an impact on teaching and learning. We are required to code absences each day. If we do not know the reason why your child is absent it will be coded unauthorised unexplained.
The Department for Education, Children and Young people continue to prioritise and follow up absences. One way we do this is by sending you a text reminder to explain the absence. Please reply to our text or phone or call into the office to explain the absence. If there are any challenges for attendance, please contact the school and we will support you with your child’s attendance.
Going to school every day means your child has every chance to learn, and be around their friends and teachers. Every day adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
