From the Principal
Reading
It was lovely to read How Starling Got His Speckles, words by Keely Parrack, art by Antonio Boffa to our school during assembly last week. The story describes how the starling bird came to have its distinctive speckled feathers. Our learners were captivated by the story hearing about the natural world and how together is safer than alone. This aligns with our school's efforts to develop a vision statement, with a focus on how everyone's voice matters. By working together as a unified school community, we can create a vision that we all believe in and live by.
Our Values
We have shared with students the summary of work they have completed to describe how we live our value of Connection and Respect. What it looks like, sounds like and feels like when we live these values makes Waverley SHINE. Our next value in focus is Courage.
Our Vision
Last year a focus group of students, parents together with our whole staff started important work to develop our vision. The frequency of the words shared are reflected in the size of the words in the clouds pictured below. For example our parents described students as the most important element for our vision.
Our students describe school as a place to feel safe, play and have spaces to learn.
Our staff are focused on learning, teaching and relationships.
The words from parents/carers, students and staff have been used to develop our vision statement as described below. We thank everyone who has been involved including our School Association to support this important work.
Kind regards,
Mrs Wightman
Principal
Mid-Year Reporting
Strong partnerships between families and schools create a supportive environment to better understand your child’s strengths and areas for growth. When families and schools work together, students are more likely to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, setting a solid foundation for their future success.
While communicating with families, meetings are a formal opportunity to discuss learning, we encourage all families to stay connected with their class teacher either by reaching out through the General Office, phoning, or arranging a meeting at a mutually agreed time. Regular communication between families and teachers ensures that parents are aware of their child's progress, challenges, and achievements. This partnership allows for early intervention when issues arise.
The Australian Curriculum
In 2024, your child has undertaken learning in the Australian Curriculum learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health & Physical Education, Visual Arts and Technologies.
Your child’s report
For English, Mathematics, and Science your child’s teacher has assessed their progress against the learning area’s Australian Curriculum achievement standard for the year level.
A 9-point scale and worded descriptor will appear on your child’s report, for students in Years 1 to 6 (and for Prep students at the end of the year). The 9-point scale shows where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level. It does not compare your child’s progress to other children in their class. Visual Arts and Health and Physical Education are rated on 5-point worded rating.
Teachers have also provided information about work habits linked to our SHINE learning behaviours; Safe, Helpful, Inclusive and Excellent.
Parent/Teacher meetings
For more information about your child’s report, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school. Parent/Teacher meetings will be held in Week 10 of Term 2. Please book an appointment using this link https://waverleyprimary.schoolzineplus.com/2024_Mid-Year

Kitchen Build
It’s an exciting time for Waverley Primary with a $210,000 upgrade on the way. This project will deliver a new kitchen for our learners. A concept plan has now been developed and is now available to view at the school office, in the community noticeboard outside the 2-3 classroom or here in the newsletter.
Should you wish to provide feedback on this concept plan, you can do so in the following ways:
- Please follow the link to a feedback form https://forms.office.com/r/ACB0kqaUBV
- Speak directly to our School Business Manager Amber Adams by phoning the school directly on 6339 1455 or emailing: Waverley.Primary@decyp.tas.gov.au

Kindergarten Enrolments 2025
Children born in 2020 are required to enrol in Kindergarten for 2025. More information about Kindergarten in Tasmanian Government Schools can be found by following the link below.
We have a pre-kinder program that takes place every Friday morning the year prior to starting Kinder. We invite families with pre-kinder age children to our Friday program.
Any families that are yet to enrol their child in kindergarten are invited to do so as soon as possible. If you have family or friends who would like to be considered, please encourage them to contact our school.
Teddy Bear Day in Kinder
Last Wednesday Kinder had a Teddy Bear Day to celebrate the learning of the nursery rhyme Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around. Students brought in their own teddy bears and soft toys and spent the day doing a variety of teddy themed activities.
The activity promoted a sense of belonging in our young learners. We had many wonderful comments from families about the engaging and fun day their child experienced at school.

LSSSA Cross Country
On Thursday 6th June Waverley Primary sent a team to compete in the LSSSA Cross Country. Some of our students wrote reports on their experience; the reports are below.
On Thursday 6th June, selected students from year 3-6 participated in the Launceston State School's Cross Country at Windsor Community Precinct at Riverside. Waverley competed against Ravenswood Heights, Youngtown, St Leonards and East Tamar Primary Schools. The most challenging part of the run was pushing the final stretch to the finish line and making sure nobody overtook me. The best part of the race was crossing the finish line even though we were exhausted.
Kayden, 4/5 Harrison
Before the cross country I felt really nervous but we were ready to run. During the race I could feel someone behind me and this made me push harder because I wanted to beat them.
Words we would use to describe the day would be nerve-racking, pushing your limits and fun. Well done to everyone wo represented Waverley on the day.
Dominic, 4/5 Harrison
At cross country some Waverley Primary students represented our school in the race at Riverside. There were four other schools participating Youngtown, Ravenswood, East Tamar and St. Leonards. The Grade 3 girls went first then the Grade 3 boys. The other grades went up to 4,5 and 6 girls and boys. The cross country went until lunch time and Waverley did very well. Our school came 5th. Youngtown came 1st, St Leonards came 2nd, East Tamar came 3rd, and Ravenswood came 4th. We left at 9.00am and returned to school at 1.00pm.

School Projects
As we wrap up another busy and productive term, we are excited to share some of the fantastic achievements and improvements we've accomplished together.
Our School Association Fundraising Committee has done an outstanding job, raising $101 through Crazy Hair Day. The donations will support the purchase of new equipment for our Athletics Carnival. This contribution will help make our event even more successful and enjoyable for all students.
We saw the successful return of Kitchen Capers, with enthusiastic participation from parents in both afternoon lunch and evening dinner classes. A huge thank you to Toni Bland for her hard work and dedication in organising these sessions. Early next term we will be calling for applications for our term 3 program.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People Information Technology Services (ITS) has significantly enhanced our school's networking infrastructure, installing $30,000 worth of improved equipment. This upgrade ensures that all staff and students have reliable internet access, no matter where they are working within our school.
Our teachers have purchased subscriptions to Mathletics, Reading Eggs, ClickView and Boardmaker for our students to enhance their learning experience.
We have made several important upgrades to our school facilities:
- Prep-1 Area: Installed new turf and we have a shade sail on order ready for the warmer months.
- Courtyard: New turf has been laid for our Communities for Children (CFC) families to enjoy. In addition to this, we created a stage area in collaboration with student voice.
- Playground Equipment: Upgrades include new grips on the swings to ensure safety and ease of use.
- We have completed the deck enclosure outside the 2/3 room and have plans to enclose the other ends of both decks, providing additional sheltered space for learning and activities.
- With the support of the Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise, we installed a regulation track, which has provided a fun regulation experience for both staff and students to enjoy.
- We have commenced the first stages of our Kitchen Upgrade Project, supported by the Tasmanian Community Fund and WD Booth, which will greatly benefit our School Food Matters and Kitchen Capers program. We look forward to sharing plans and consulting with you about the project.
These improvements and programs are a testament to our community's hard work, dedication, and support. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and effort to make these improvements possible.
We look forward to continuing our progress and achieving even more in Term 3.

Pyjama Day
On Wednesday, July 3rd, our Year 6 Leaders invite all students to wear their pyjamas to school! It's going to be a cozy and fun day, plus your gold coin donation will help fund our Year 6 end-of-year celebration events.
Here are some guidelines to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe:
What to Wear:
- Sneakers or school shoes
- Onesies
- Oodies
- Dressing gown
- Long sleeve PJs
What NOT to Wear:
- Ugg boots or slippers
- Short PJ bottoms or singlet tops
Let’s make this day amazing and show our support for the Year 6 celebrations!
Australia's Biggest Morning Tea
Last week, our staff came together for a special event - Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. This event was in support of the Cancer Council, and it was a tremendous success!
The morning tea was not just about enjoying delicious food. It was also about raising money for a worthy cause. Our team raised $164! This amount is enough to provide SunSmart education to 102 students. SunSmart education teaches students how to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun, which is especially important for preventing skin cancer.
At Waverley Primary, we believe in giving back to our community. We are inspired by the generosity our community has shown us and we would like to continue that spirit of giving.
If you would like to support the Cancer Council and help us make a difference, you can donate by visiting this link: https://www.biggestmorningtea.com.au/fundraisers/waverleyprimary
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event so special!
